Loves Urgent Longings …

“Love’s urgent longings …” — this phrase from The Dark Night by St. John of the Cross has been echoing in my mind and resounding in my heart today. Would that every human heart knew the love of which the Spanish saint writes, and that laying our face on our beloved, we might leave our cares among the lilies!

Stanzas Of The Soul

One dark night,
fired with love’s urgent longings
– ah, the sheer grace! –
I went out unseen,
my house being now all stilled.

In darkness, and secure,
by the secret ladder, disguised,
– ah, the sheer grace! –
in darkness and concealment,
my house being now all stilled.

On that glad night,
in secret, for no one saw me,
nor did I look at anything,
with no other light or guide
than the one that burned in my heart.

This guided me
more surely than the light of noon
to where he was awaiting me
– him I knew so well –
there in a place where no one appeared.

O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn!
O night that has united
the Lover with his beloved,
transforming the beloved in her Lover.

Upon my flowering breast
which I kept wholly for him alone,
there he lay sleeping,
and I caressing him
there in a breeze from the fanning cedars.

When the breeze blew from the turret,
as I parted his hair,
it wounded my neck
with its gentle hand,
suspending all my senses.

I abandoned and forgot myself,
laying my face on my Beloved;
all things ceased; I went out from myself,
leaving my cares
forgotten among the lilies.

Kenilworth Acquatic Gardens: A Washington Treasure

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is one of the treasures of DC that not many people visit. Perhaps this is because it’s somewhat off the beaten path, tucked in on the easternmost edge of the city, just inside the Maryland border.  I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon with my friends Carter and Steve, enjoying some of this garden’s beautiful treasures. In addition to the water lilies and lotus blossoms, this marshy area is also home to many red winged blackbirds.  As I was taking a picture of one in the distance, he flew right toward me and I could see the full red of his wings’ underside — beautiful!

Morning Prayer

Loving God…

Help me to see my faults and failings and to be sorry for all my sins against myself, others, and You.

Forgive me, Lord for the choices I’ve made that have not been life-giving, loving, and kind.

I love You, Lord, with my whole mind, heart, body, and soul; with every fiber of my being and every part of who I am.

Thank You, Lord, for everything … for everything is from You.

Prayerful Vigil at Catholic University

It was great to gather earlier this evening with students from CUAllies, the gay/straight alliance at The Catholic University of America. CUAllies is not yet formally recognized by  CUA, as other student groups are. This gathering — not of protest but of prayer — bore witness on the grounds of this most Catholic of universities, praying that God’s LGBT children might enjoy at CUA the same rights and respect that as their straight brothers and sisters. Drawing upon our rich Catholic heritage, we heard passages from Vatican II’s Gaudium et Spes and the US Bishops’ Always Our Children. Prayers were offered on behalf of LGBT youth throughout the world — especially those who feel isolated and alone — that they might know there are people who love and care for and accept them just as God created them to be.

A few birds from Palm Springs

If it weren’t obvious from the header graphic of this blog, I like taking pictures of birds. I’m no pro at it by any measure. But birds have a particular beauty and appeal for me.  I’m not quite sure what it is that attracts me — their flight? their songs? their great variety of sizes and colors?  I suppose it’s all of these traits, and more. Birds draw our attention upward, to the sky and to the heavens. They draw us up and out beyond ourselves, reminding us of both our own ties to the earth, but also the call of heaven that tugs at our hearts.

Here are just a few pictures from a recent trip to Palm Springs, CA.

Birds and bees and flowers and trees

This past year I’ve really enjoyed taking nature photographs — birds and flowers seem to be most appealing.  Here are just a few images from Southwest Florida on my recent visit with my parents for a few days over Christmas. (click on any image below to see the full photo gallery).
